Under llio Dislinguished Patronage of the Governor-General and Viscountess Jcllicoe. A NOTED VISITOR. M. ANDRE SKALSKI. OOER.A HOUSE TO-NIGHT. An interesting visitor to Palmerston North at the present time is M. Andre Skalski, the noted Polish pianist, who opens a two nights’ season at the Opera House this evening. The visitor, who enjoys a wide reputation, not only as a pianist, hut as a conductor and composer, proved on being interviewed by a “Standard” reporter, to be a delightful personality, bis well spoken English, although exhibiting a trace of the foreigner, was a delight rather than a detraction. Breaking away from a game of chess, a pastime so dear to the hearts of many of his countrymen, M. Skalski graciously related a few incidents in connection with his life and history. Born at Warsaw in 1895, M. Skalski is thus in his 23th year and, despite the arduous nature of his career, bears an almost boyish appearance. When but a boy it was found that be was the possessor of the musical temperament and Ids parents arranged for him to proceed to Germany, where lie studied under Teichineuller, Max Reger and Hans Sitt. On the completion of his studies, lie conducted orchestras and spent two years touring the Continent in this capacity and in giving pianoforte recitals. During the European upheaval he was called to service with the Russian army and a year later obtained his discharge, on the grounds of ill-health. Following this interruption in his career, he entered on a concert tour of Russia, Siberia and the whole of the Par East, eventually working south to Australia. Since September last M. Skalski has given no less than 82 recitals and in the cities and lesser towns of Australia has met with a wonderful measure of success. In making reieronce to his appointment as conductor of the New South Wales State orchestra, M. Skalski staled that, as his reputation had been more widely' known as a pianist rather than as a conductor, be engaged the orchestra for demonstration purposes mid his enterprise was attended with immediate success, the first concert in the Sydney Town Hall realising £SOO. As a direct result the Advisory Board had selected him as conductor and he remained in this capacity until the orchestra ceased to be under Government control. During his term no less than 16 concerts were given in Sydney. A personal tour of Australia followed, which was later extended to New Zealand. The venture has in all respects, he stated, been a huge success, and recently, when in the south, it was found necessary to extend ids two nights' seasons to four and hve M, Skalski spoke in high terms of the flattering receptions accorded him both on and off'the concert platform by the civic authorities and the members of the musical communities, lie felt that the honours showered upon him wore but a humble tribute to the beauty of the music he endeavoured to express. He, however attributed his success to the fact that he compiled his programmes so as to gm pleasure to all classy of (he community by embodying classical gems, popular pieces and technical displays. It. is interesting to note tlnu M. Skalski carries his own piano with him, the instrument being valued at 1000 guineas Despite the unfavourable nature of the elements, M. Skalski has since his arrival in Aeu Zealand been enabled to view many of uie beauty spots and he stated that they compared very favourably with the worms best Recently he undertook the arduous task of climbing Mount Egmont and theie came in contact with the snow which he had not experienced since leaving Ins own M Skalski concluded by slating that he would carry away with him many pleasant recollections of his stay mN™ ‘“ ld ’ which was a country of vast possibilities.
