MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
CHARGE OF DRUNKENNESS
At the Magistrate’s Court to-day before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., a best offender for drunkenness was convicted and ordered to pay witnesses’ expenses £4 is (id. , Medical evidence was given by two doctors who stated that, when the} saw the defendant, he on the verge of delirium tremens, '1 he opinion was expressed by one of the medical witnesses that a prohibition order would not serve as a deterrent. Evidence having been given by the defendant’s wife who stated that he had lost four situations through his drinking habits, Mr Fletcher, who appeared for the defendant, asked the .Magistrate to give the man a further chance, stating that his employers would be agreeable to taking him back. The magistrate decided to adjourn his decision with regard to committing the defendant to an inebriates home until June 9, but it would he the latter’s last chance, anti if he had any more outbreaks he would be sent away for at least 12 months. In the meantime he would be convicted and ordered yu pay costs.
