Fine weather prevailed yesterday for the opening day’s racing in connection with the autumn meeting of the Dannevirko Racing Club, which attracted a large crowd of racegoers. /The track was in good order, while the lacing was interesting throughout. Everything was in order from a managerial viewpoint under the secretaryship of Mr Walter Dobson, while the other officials got through their duties in a capable'/ manner. As starter Mr R. 11. Skipwithf i performed successfully and Mr R. H, Aldworth, the judge, gave universal satisfaction with Ids decisions. Speculation was britk, the figures showing £16,174 as against/f! 13,242 for the corresponding day last year. The Palmerston-trained Tussore, which /was well handled by A. Oliver, won the Tahoraito Hack Welter after a good taco with • Blissfulness, March On being third/- In the run home Blissfulness ran wide/and interfered with the progress of March On, and as 'the result of an enquiry lasting some time the positions were reversed. There were 12 starters in the Cup, Taipairu, Crucelle and Crown Star being backed in that order. ■ When the tapes lifted The Speaker quickly went to the front, and establishing a substantial lead looked like winning all the way, but entering the straight Crucelle and the outsider Afskari clpsed on the_ leader. At the distance the latter was in charge, and going jin won all out by a length. Crown Star, (in the same stable as The Speaker, did not /begin well, and rounding the bend for /'homo was last. He, however, finished well, eventually running into fburth place. The winner, Askari, is owned by Mr R. McKenzie, of Palmerston -North, who was successful with Sunart in the Wanganui Cup. Sahtonia, trained by A. Oliver, won the Onngi Hack, and j Nursing Sister, in the same stable, secured second money in the President’s Handicap. The •only mishap during the afternoon was in the Rakaiatai Welter, when Peneus fell rounding the bend for home, his rider, C. Stowe,- receiving a nasty shaking.
