RACES AT AVONDALE.

The Avondale Jockey Club’s spring meeting was opened to-day in fine weather. There was a large attendance, the totalisator investments were £58,870, compared with £63,554 10s, for the corresponding day last year. Results:

Grey Lynn Hurdles, 2miles.—Dempsey, 9.0, l’; Hyginas, 11.2, 2; Tenacious, 9.6, 3. All started. Won by five lengths. Time, 3,46 2-5.

Avondale Stakes, 5 furlongs.—Bathos 1, York Abbey 2, Ballymena 3. Scratched: Uralla, Aerofortis, Charlady. Won by two lengths, a head between second and third. Time, 1.1 4-5. Avondale Cup, of 2000 sovs, one mile and a half.—Royal Present, 7.12, A. McCormac, 1; Gasbag, 9.5, H. Reed, 2; Glencanny 7.0, 3. Also ran: Tame Fox 8.6, Sycorax 8,2, Admiral Codrington 8.0, Arch Salute 8.0. Royal Abbey 7.12, Gold Kip 7.7, Martial Dawn 7.5, Khubla Khan 7.4, Mangamahpe 7.3, Stork 7.0, Perfect Day 7.0, Some Fashion 6.13, Battle Knight, 6.13, Prince Jewel 6.10, Haurangi 6.9, Poteen 6.7. ASHBURTON RACES. ASHBURTON, Sept. 23. At the Ashburton spring meeting the totalisator handled £14,665 10s, making a total of £27,706 for the meeting, as against £30,837 last year.
