THE FRENCH HARVEST.
SHORTAGE OF WHEAT. VINE AND SUGAR CROPS GOOD. Received September 1, 9.55 a.m. PARIS, Aug. 31. The French wheat harvest is estimated at seventy-five million quintals, necessitating the importation of eight to ton million quintals. The vine crops are exceptionally good except in Burgundy and the east.' The sugar boot crop is very heavy, and there will be a large surplus available for export. —A. and N.Z. cable. TROUBLES fH IRELAND. BRITISH TROOPS WANTED. MEMORIAL TO LLOYD GEORGE. LONDON, Aug. 31. The majority of householders in Peltigo and Groveilin', which suffered grievously during the J fish rebel invasion, have sent a memorial to Mr Lloyd George asking him to permit the British troops to remain, the people fearing to be at the mercy of the rebels. —A. and N.Z. cable. TREATMENT OF PRISONERS. LONDON, Aug. 31. Disciplinary measures have been taken with the Irregulars interned at Maryborough prison owing to the discovery of a, tunnel prepared tor an escape, live prisoners were wounded during the disturbances. —A. and N.Z. cable.
