THE AYRSHIRE COW.
DEMONSTRATION AT SHOW
A demonstration of the Ayshire breed of cattle was given at the National Dairy Show by Air F. Mills, of _ llawera. There was a largo attendance of interested visitors. Mr Mills pointed out the adaptability of the Ayrshire cow for some of tho hilly country of New Zealand. On the Hat country the It reed, lie said, would do equally its well as any other, and he was convinced that it would surpass any other kind on hard rough country. In other countries, whore testing of herds was in operation, records were being established by Ayrshires .that were quite “respectable.” These showed that year by year the breeders of litis class of animal were improving the standard, so that very soon they hoped that they would equal the high ones of other breeds. Mr Mills pointed out that there were many prejudices held by the general public against Ayrshire's, making the breed a somewhat unpopular one, but ho stated that many of these were really not justified. One great prejudice arose some years ago through New Zealand farmers breeding smalltouted cattle, and through not treating them us they should, this tending to make them appear “wild” if badly treated afterwards. These faults he declared to have been eradicated by later breeders in tin’s country. The Ayrshire Breeders’ Association was out to educate tho public to this fact. Tho demonstrator had two Ayrshire cows in the ring, and ho pointed out tho good and bad points of the breed, He kept his audience interested- throughout his demonstration, and at the conclusion a vote of thanks was passed to him.
