THE NEW HEADMASTER

MR BUCIILER'S APPOINTMENT CONFIRMED.

The monthly meeting of the Terrace End School Committee was held last evening, Mr (!. 11. Stiles (chairman) presiding. There wore also present: Messrs G. P. Jarrett, T. Hastings, S. 11. Snell, A. J. Yortt, I). J. Lovelock, J. Davidson, W. Kave and G. Mcllroy. The Wanganui Education Board wrote that the protest made by the committee against, the shortage of a first assistant teacher would come before the next meeting of the hoard.—Received. Mr W. R. Birnio wrote, thanking the committee for the support given him during the term of his service on the Wanganui Education Board as representative of the Palmevston North urban area.—On the motion of Mr Davidson, seconded by Mr Mcllroy, it was agreed to support Mr Birnio in the election next month. The chairman rejiorted that ho had met the board's architect on the school grounds that afternoon with reference to the site itnd the plans of the proposed baths. The architect had not been able to furnish much information fik he would have to interview the borough engineer as to supply mains, etc. He would be going into this question at an early dale, and the committee would be informed as to the result. The architect had given them rather a severe jolt when he informed the committee that the baths would cost about £I4OO, or even £I6OO. Mr T. Hastings was appointed secretary vice Mr A. J. Yortt, who has resigned on account of leaving ihe district. Mr A. W. Wood is to be recommended to the board to till the vacancy on the committee. GENERAL. Messrs Snell and Kaye were appointed a Visiting committee for the ensuing month, The visiting committee for the past month reported that all school work was progressing satisfactorily, 'the Borough Council's donation of books to the school library had come to hand, The volumes were of an excellent character. Some minor repairs and alterations were needed, Accounts amounting to i,'B were passed for pay mem. It was decided to hold a bazaar in August In aid of the baths fund, and to call a meeting' of householders on Monday next to make detailed arrangements, It was stated that Mr Dunahey, of ihe Independent Pictures, had granted a matinee in aid of the proposed school baths one day next month. The committee would pay ihe running expenses only, so that they aimed to clear about iJ-45 nett. Tho expenses, it was expected, Would amount to £5. The headmaster reported thai the number on the roll was 737, the average attendance being 647, and ihe highest 667. There were many children absent owing to colds or slight ailments, this accounting for the drop in the average attendance. Inspectors Adams and Ryder visited the school, investigating the methods of teaching employed in the various classes, closely inspecting the pupils' work, and discussing the methods employed and in some cases giving suggestions where necessary. Their report was not yet to hand. Dr. Gtmn and Nurse Wise also inspected Standards 111., IV. and V. Application was made to the board for i dozen desks, as the accommodation in some rooms was lacking and a satisfactory •eply had been received. OLD PUPILS OF TERRACE END. ASSOCIATION TO BE FORMED. A meeting of ihe Terrace End School old pupils was held in the Opera I louse supper rcoi,i last evening. Air' O. Tremaine occupied the chair. The main object of the meeting was to form an Old Pupils' Association, and this after a short discussion was unanimously decided upon. Mrs Cushion and Mr Clifford were elected joint secretaries and Mr Ticmaine treasurer. The chairman on behalf of the associa-; don conveyed a vote of thanks to Airs Cushion for her interest shown towards ihe association. It was decided to hold a further meeting next week.
