WINTER SHOW ENTRIES.

ANOTHER RECORD ESTABLISHED,

HUGE DEMAND FOR SPACE. In keeping with the premier position Ihe exhibition occupies among agricultural and pastoral fixtures in the Dominion, record entries have again been received for the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association’s Winter Show, which ill open at Palmerston North on Tuesday, June 20. Excluding poultry—which is an exhibition in itself—the total entries for this year’s show number 1678, compared with 1453 for last year. The fact that the association is able lo record an increase of 225 entries, despite the fact that the soldiers’ exhibits have been eliminated from tho catalogue, speaks volumes for the show’s extraordinary popularity and is a lilting answer to the rival claims advanced on behalf, of the growing but smaller exhibition held at Hamilton.

Jn the poultry division alone the entries have established a striking record, being 1264, as compared with 943 at ihe last show. The figures in detail are as follow:

A NEW DEPARTURE, Analysing tho above figures it is interesting to note that tho association is breaking now ground in that it has established classes for competition on the part of boys’ and girls’ agricultural clubs. The entries for this section total 70, a very gratifying response for the inaugural year of the coinpe. tition, which is bound io a centre of attraction, Tho exhibition this year comprises field roots, and next show it is hoped to extend the scope of the competition. Another pleasing feature is that, on account of the action of the secretary (Mr V\. T. Penny) in organising the ladies of the district, the entries in the home cookery classes have increased from 369 to 483—a very substantial total. A satisfactory increase is also recorded in the fruit classes, while the slight falling off in the number of entries for sheep dog trials is accounted for by the fact that this year the competitions are limited to championship events. Collateral with the big increase la entries the secretary reports an increased demand for space, which has greatly exceeded the amount available. The Department ol Agriculture's exhibit, which occupied 5000 ft at the last show, will he missing this year, but tho space thus released has all been absorbed. As late as this morning the secretary received a big order _ for spare from a former Wellington exhibitor, which could not be idled, every foot of space hal - ing long since been sold. The show buildings and grounds are all in perfect oulei, and if the present lino weather only holds the show should be a record one from all points of view.
