J.OOC.CCO TONS OF SHIPPING

Official figures received in Sydney recently from the East showing Japan’s advance as a maritime power, aroused much comment in shipping circles. Investigations by tho Department of Communications show that there are 866 Japanese vessels of not less than 1000 ions each, with a total tonnage of more than 3.000,000. Shipowners with vessels of over 10,000 lons each registered in Japan are headed bv the Nippon Y'usen Kaisha. That company has 104 vessels, and the gross tonmm'o is 542,675. Then follows the Osaka Shosett Kaisha, with 92 vessels, totalling 590,i04 tons gross. Both lines trade to Australia, Forty vessels of over 1000 tons have been placed * in commission this year.
