RAILWAY EMPLOYEES.

OFFICERS’ INSTITUTE CONFERENCE (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON. June 9. The annual conference of the New Zealand Railway Officers’ Institute was continued to-day, the chair being occupied by Air J. R, Robertson, president. Discussion was resumed on the Auckland remit, advocating the setting up of a permanent tribunal to deal with wages and conditions of work similar to the temporary conciliation council that was set up after the 1920 railway strike. The remit was passed. Another Auckland remit, providing for the grading of positions throughout the Dominion. caused a long discussion, delegates from each district alleging that the need for such reform was creating great dissatisfaction and discontent, it was decided to ask each branch to furnish the executive committee with a report within three weeks’ time. A suh-commitleo was appointed to draft suitable instructions to branches in order that full effect might be given to the conference's instructions tit the matter. Remits were considered from JJuuedm, North Canterbury and North Otago, urging closer relationship with other Stale employees’ organisations. It was agreed that continued efforts be made to create as good an understanding as possible between State employees’ organisations, so that whenever possible till societies may beuclit bv acting in unison. 'That the Executive Conned give serious consideration to the taking of a ballot ol the whole membership of the Railway Officers’ Institute on the question of linking up with the Alliance of Labour the subject of remits from Palmerston Nonli and North Canterbury. Discussion was proceeding when the conference rose. The delegates at the conference were elected honorary members of the ( nil Service Club to-night, and will be entertained at a smoke social by the Wellington branch.
