QUARTERLY MFETING,

RESULTS OF POPPY DAY CAMPAIGN,

Tho quarterly mooting of the Palmerston North R.S.A. Executive, was hold in tho Soldiers’ Club last night, when there were present: Messrs B. J. Jacobs (chairman), A. W. Chapman, D. T. Wilks, L. Bryant, J. W. Rulhcrlurd, S. Wright, \\. G. Rnthorfurd, W. Jewell, T. 11. P. Darcy, and Dr. Lett.

I'ho, chairman reported that the local branch laid collected £425 2s 3d towards tho Poppy Day fund. There were still some poppies unsold that should be sunt in so that they could be credited against the amount duo to France, otherwise tho R.S.A. would have to pay for them. It was anticipated that £3500 would he placed to tho credit of tho whole of the Wellington province, and the towns requiring assistance for unemployed returned soldiers would be Napier, Hastings, Muster ton, Wanganui, Palmerston North and Wellington. Those assisted would have jo work for the money, the local associations supervising the allocation of the funds. Tho distribution of the money would he made as early as possible in June, and tho men assisted would ho all unskilled workers.

On llm morion of Air J. W. Rutherford, it- was agreed that preference be given, in i lie allocation of work, to the local body able to give, the most work to the unemployed. It was decided that the chairman and the secretary approach the various local bodies iu Palmerston North with a view to obtaining an idea of what work might bo forthcoming. It was further decided to advertise asking unemployed cx-soldiers to enrol with the secretary in order that the association might ascertain ilio extent of the unemployment. The Whakaronga sub-branch of the R.S.A. ionvarded the following resolution: “That (bis branch suggest to the. executive, as a method of utilising the proceeds accruing horn the gale of poppies, to arrange with out-of-work discharged soldiers to accept, employment with soldier settlers cm their holdings, thus helping the settler to moot his obligations and ensuring employment and a good homo to the unemployed soldier.—lt was agreed that the resolution be embodied in the executive’s report to the central committee. OTHER MATTERS. A letter of protest against the- erection of a German school at Kongo tea was received from the Rongotea .sub-branch of the R.S.A. and the executive resolved to reply that the branch would have the executive’s full sttppori in any move it might take towards preventing iho erection of such a school. The secretary stated that the soldier settlors of Alakowhai wore anxious to form a •sub-branch of the Palmerston North R.S.A. There were about 40 soldiers settled. there.—lt was decided that the chairman and the secretary address the settlors with a- view lo their linking up with the Rongotea branch. It was decided to write to Mr C. H. Pickering thanking him for his offer of assisting certain unemployed members of the associat ion by granting them the use of his swing boats, so that the men could erect them and divide iho proceeds. Mr S. \\ right brought up a suggestion that Territorials be admitted to full membership of the eiiih at the ordinary rate of subscription. The idea was to keep the membership np in the future. Tim chairman thought, tlia.lt the time was not opportune to admit Territorials to the association, and the. executive agreed with this, at the

ante time thanking Mr Wright for the uggeslion.

The secretary said that the Soldiers’ Club was most unhealthy during iho winter mouths, as the heating system was of no use whatever. Fireplaces wore wanted. Messrs Cliapman, Wright-and Dilks were appointed a sub-eommiitee, to act with the secretary in making arrangements for the annual re-anion which will ho held on July

Accounts amounting to £25 7s 6d were

passed for payment. A small sab-committee was sot up to investigate a scheme that the. Dunedin R.S.A. have put into operation, whereby returned men are granted special cash reductions on goods purchased from various retailers, with a view to arranging a similar one in Palmerston North, if possible.
