The late Sir Ernest Shackloton left all nis unsettled property, amounting to £joo, to his wife. The Hon. U. H. Guthrie, who lias been Acting-Minister .of Railways for a year, lias been appointed • Minister of Railways. The many friends of Mr C. Smith, manager/of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand, will bo pleased to lean, that he is making satisfactory progress towaids recovery from an illness which has confined him to Ins home and he expects to resume Ids duties shortly.
