ATTEMPTED ROBBERY.

The Golden State, Limited, the "crack" passenger train from Chicago to Los Angeles, was stopped at Tuscan by eight robbers who placed torpedoes on the track, cutting the train in two. Taking the mailear live miles along the line, the robbers prepared to dynamite the safe. Harold Stewart, an express messenger, opened fire with a heavy rifle, killing one bandit, and injuring two others, and the rest took to flight.
