NO CRIME.

DURING CHRISTMAS SEASON. FREEDOM FROM THEFTS AND ACCIDENTS. “ For fifteen years past Palmerston North has not enjoyed greater freedom from crime over the festive season than lias been the case this year,” said Detective-Sergeant Quirke to a “Standard” reporter this morning. He commented on the largo number of visitors who were in the town over Christmas and said it was satisfactory to note that not a single theft had been reported since Saturday night. Hotels and boardinghouses had apparently escaped the attentions of light-lingered persons, whilst at the Awapuni racecourse lie had not hoard of any thefts. Doubtless, some racegoers had lost money from their pockets, but tins was only to be expected when thousands of people were congregated over a small area and many of them were in an excited stale of mind. Certainly there was no indication that pickpockets had been at work and personally he thought there would be few centres in New Zealand that could claim the same degree of immunity from crime over the Christmas season as Palmerston North. This statement was endorsed by SeniorSergeant Fraser, who said the town had been particularly free of crime. J here had also been a gratifying absence from accidents, despite the heavy traffic on the main routes to Awapuni and he felt that the police control had been well directed.
