PEONAGE ALLEGATIONS.
PRECAUTIONS AT THE TRIAL. NEW YORK. April 5. ■Tho Williams trial on the peonage charges opened at Covington, Georgia, with heavily armed guards searching all persons entering tho court room for weapons, for fear of a possible demonstration cither by tho whitos or blacks. The State 1 Attorney feared an attack upon the negro .witnesses. Williams maintained Ins customary silence. Tho prosecution has summoned more than o dozen witnesses, who are expected to' support Mannings testimony. Tho choice of a jury was considered the first, victory for Williams, since it was composed of seven rich planters and five other white business men—A. and N.Z. cable.
