BUTTER AND CHEESE.
Private advices have been received from London to the effect that the demand for butter lias increased with the reduction of the retail price (says tb o Wellington Post). The estimated increase in consumption is 2d to 50 per cent. . Government cheese- is being sold m the United Kingdom at Id perpmmd or more reduction on retail prices. It IS stated that this fall ill price is the result of the Government's inducement to traders to reduce heavy holdings estimated to amount to 8500 'toua. Free cheese is expected to be reduced in price in harmony with tho Government's latest reduction. _ Stocks of cheese in New Zealand awaiting shipment continue to be heavy, duo in large part to the. slow turn-round of steamers.
