A Maori chioftuinoss, Rawea, has died at Rata at tho age of 55 years. Born at Turnkino, she was a daughter of tho Into Mete Kingi, who was a .son of Meto Kingi Paetihi, >he lending chief of the Wangunui tribe, and who was tho first Maori member of Parliament, lie was ono of those who, in the days when fighting was frequent, was leader of friendly Natives fighting for the British against the Hiiubaus. Ho held a commission and was presented with a sword by Queen Victoria, and was known ns General Meto Kingi. Tho deceased's mother was tho daughter of Kawini Hunia, of Parewanui, one.of tho most prominent chiefs of tho Ngatiapa tribe, who was inMiuimiital in effecting tho sale of the Rangitikei block to tho Crown. Rawea married Mr T. 11. Marumaru, of Parewanui, a chief of the Ngatiapas, and well known in sporting circles. Some years Liter he .lied, and later she became the wife of Mr E. Sutherland, who died a year or two ncco. Deceased had been ailing for some fix months, but her death was quite unexpected. Tho death lias taken place at Foxton of Mr F. Hooker, a well-known resident of that township. Deceased was tho third son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Hooker, of Carterton, and was bom in Victoria in 1853. Ho came to New Zealand with his parents as a rhild, and settled in Carterton. In 1876 he returned to Australia, where he was married ut Dallev, Queensland, but ill 1895 returned to New' Zealand, and took up his residence in Foxton, whore he has since resided. Deceased was a splendid example of physical manhood, and in his younger days was noted for his physical prowess. He was quiet ana Unassuming in manner, and a man of few words, and kept aloof from public aitairs. His homo and garden occupied all his spare time. As. a workman ho gave of his best and "go-slow" methods were not in his make-up. He leaves a widow, three, wins and four daughters, to mourn the death of a devoted and affectionate husband and father. The daughters are: Mrs R. Dynes (Foxton), Mrs W. Gray (Pahnerston North) Mrs F. Curtis (Ohnkune), Mrs S. Wright (Foxton), and the sons Hooker (Palmerston North), I'. nooffl Auckland), and Barney (Palmorston North) His brothers are Mr R. Hooker (Pahnerston North) Gu*. and Albert (Carterton), and h.S sisters Mesdames T. Beard (Cartel ton , John" n (Kiokio), and Sheen (Gisborne). There arc also 15 grandehildren.-Herald.
