MONTHLY MEETING,

Tho monthly mooting of the Kairanga County Council wus held to-day, the following being present:—Messrs J. Linklator (chairman). •->. Cbllis, G. Craw, M. Moody, V. J. Small, \V. R. llopcroft. A. J. Taylor and (.'. Anderson. ENGINEER'S REPORT.

Tho engineer reported as follows: Taonui Riding.—An avorago of about seven teams have been employed in carting out metal for repairs to different roads in this riding, the largest quantity being used on Foxton line. Two graders liavo been in use during the greater part of the month, trimming off the grass from the flanks of roads, anil grading in loose metal from sides. Tho damage done to the oil engine by recent floods has been made good, and crushing resumed. A start lias been made with the re-metalling of the Foxton line with crushed stone preparatory to treating tho surface with tar and asphalt, about 10

chains having been completed. The pipes ant! floodgate have been carted for a new culvert across Kairanga-lUmnythorpe road. A small addition lias been made to buildings at Awapuni depot for use as a smithy, and some further excavation made to improve access to crusher hoppers. Mangaonc Riding.—An average of about seven teams have been employed in carting out met id for repairs to roads in this Tiding. The whole length of Taonui-Feilding

road lias now been scarified and rolled down again, suflictout metal being added to lill depressions. The grader has been employed in trimming up different roads in the riding. Besides the above, a good deal of maintenance in the way of cleaning out drains and water-tables has been carried out. A cement pipe culvert has been put in on James line, and pipes carted for another largo culvert on the same road. Levels have been taken for lengths of drain

on Kairanga-Bunnythorpo road. Fitzherbort Riding.—An average of about four teams have been employed in oarting out motal for repairs. A grader has been employed for the greater pait of the month in trimming up roads in this riding. A little widening has been carried out at narrow places on formation on Millrick's line. A large timber ojilvert on the Pahiatua I rack collapsed, and the largo Riling over same was carried away by rush of water. This has necessitated the closing of the road for several days, until large cement pipes have, been put in and filling replaced. This work is being pushed on with as quickly as possible, a party working all day Sunday at the work. Two men have been employed in cutting scrub overhanging road beyond bridge site, and in widening formation. The engineering survey of bends on Fitzhcrbert East road, where it is proposed to straighten formation, has been proceeded with and levels are now being plotted a.nd estimates prepared. Soldier Settlements.—A wapuni: The three-inch well has now been driven and a e:ood supply of water obtained at 374 feet. The reticulation will be proceeded with as soon as possible. CJlovcrlea: A length of the drain" has been deviated on to the road in order to straighten same, find to prevent it being blocked by stock. The metal on the road has also been graded in. Kaivanjra: Some further wa.ter-tabling lias been carried out on this road. Manawatu (Jorge.—An extra man has had !to be employed during the month as slips .ha-vo been fairly prevalent. The road suri face is now in lair order. ) A total of 36 day-men have been emploved duiing the month, and about 62 draught horses have been engaged in cartI ing out metal and grading. Generally 'speaking, the roads are in fair order for this season of the year. | WATER-WORKS ENGINEER'S RKI'ORT.

'The engineer for the Fitzherbcrl waterworks roportcel as follows:--Reticulation pipes have been laid to section 174 and aionsr the westerly lino of section 112, extending from the train pipe to Kendall's road and thence to section 92 'he same road, in ail, a distance of one mile and 1C chains. In both these lines of pipes there is a good pressure and an excellent flow of water. Reticulation pipes have also been laid along Whitmore road, and this week they will be finished to a distance of about. 7G chains. In this pipe the pressure- will be about 90 lbs. to the square inch.
