REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL.

MANAWATU WIN RETURN MATCH WITH HOROWHENUA. Drizzling rain and a sodden ground were the on Saturday atternoon for the return representative Rugby football match between Manawatu and llorowhenua. An earlier representative game on the showgrounds between Wangamii and Alana watu junior teams had greatly increased the greasy nature of the turf, and, in consequence, the game resolved itself into a pitched battle between the forwards with occasional nippy bad; efforts. It must be said, however, that Ihe backs of both teams conducted themselves well under the circumstances, und made tlio most of the opportunities that came their way. The previous game played at Jievin had demonstrated to the Manawatu selectors the necessity for a solid pack to oppose the heavy vanguard from llorowhenua, and in consequence the forward division was considerably altered. The personnel of "the back team had also undergone changes. The visiting team was much the same as that which defeated Manawatu at Levin, with the exception that, Jacobs, who is a member of the New Zealand team, was missing, and his place was taken by Stratford, as wing forward'. Taking the field in white jerseys the Manawatu forwards looked heavier than was really the case and it was only, when both packs were brought together that it could plainly be seen that the preponderance in weight was in favour of the llorowhenua. representatives. Manawatu's win, was, under .-itch circumstances, a meritorious one. Features of the game were the splendid play of Kord at second live-eighth lor the visitors and Stewart as full-back for the home side. The latrer'.s play throughout was cool and calculated, and his handling and kicking of the ball decisive and accurate. On the day's play his inclusion in the team to play against tlio New Zealand representatives on Wednesday is well justified. 'I he cornplei'' personnel of both teams is as follows : llorowhenua (black): Full-back, Clarke; three-quarters, L, McDonald, \Y. Marshall, and N. Winiaia; live-eighths, R. Ford and H. McDonald; half, Cfiku; forwards, R. George, J. Burrows, C Moynihan, W. Winiata, I!. Broughton, K. Dalziell, I). Wilson, and Stratford (wing). Manawatu (white): Full-back, .T. Stewart; throe-quarters, f'ergnsson, Blazev. and Feeder; live-eighths. Wilkes and Ingham; half, Bramwoll; forwards-, Riggs, Dustiii, Brown, Munro, Hope, Ualpin. and Campbell (wing). The first and only score was not long m coming. Play hung in mid-field tor a few minutes from the commencement until Manawatu bore down to their opponents' territory. A line out in this area was followed by a scramble in which Riggs seized ihe leather and grounded it near the corner. The kick from a itiflicuH angle was too much for Stewart. Manawatu 3, Ilorowhenua 0. The. visitors retaliated with strenuous plav which was as stoutly opposed, and though each side were iorcea in turn to take refuge in a force, no further score had boon recorded when hull-time, was sounded. Campbell at wing forward rendered yeoman service throughout the speli, and in the second did not relax his efforts. An old player, lie knows all the artful dodges that can be employed by a, wingforward, and was as quick to use them himself as he was to thwart them in the opposing wing's play. On resumption after the spell, Clarke, the visiting team's full-back found it necessary to ictire, and Marshall took his place. W. Wmiata took up the vacated centre position, and T. Winiata went on as wing three-quarter, where he succeeded in making himself conspicuous in a number of dangerous rushes. A splendid kick at goal by N. Winiata from near tho half-way line was the most brilliant feature of the second spell. Though the kick failed 11 was a great effort. Despite the fact thai each side held temporary advantages in turn, the game ended without further score, leaving Manawatu the winners by three points to nil. Mr .1. B. I'roud refereed. The llorowhenua team left for home by train immediately after the match.
