BIG LOAN POLL.

IN MANAWATU COUNTY. The attention of ratepayers of the County of Manawatu is drawn to an important event for them occurring on Tuesday next, the 13th inst., when a poll to borrow £30,000 will be taken. The Council finding it impossible, without materially raising the rates, to copo with the great increase in the cost of maintaining the roads, especially as there are two main loads running through the whole length and breadth of the County, has had a local Act passed authorising it to borrow £30,000 to purchase and install an up-to-date road-making plant and machinery, including a new stone-crusher and elevating plant, tractors and wagons, for conveying the metal from the tninline on to the roads, and also to! renew the remaining old portion of the; tramline (4A miles) with heavier rails. The present" plant is inadequate and must be replaced. Already the Council has made arrangements to borrow the money at 5i per cent, and as the money market is on the rise the Council is fortunate in having secured a promise' for the money _ before the rise took place. It only remains for the ratepayers to vote for the loan, and as the whole' County will materially benefit if the poll is curried, it will be wise to carry It the loan is defeated, it will mean the money must be provided out of rates, as the work must bo gone on with.
