POHANGINA COUNTY.
BRIDGES AND CULVERTS. At Saturday’s meeting of the Pohanging County Council the County engineer reported that, as instructed, he had inspected several bridges and culverts throughout the County. He had found that Southie’s bridge was in a very advanced state of disrepair and needed immediate rebuilding. As the stringers and caps in Philpott a bridge had completely rotted, this structure also needed reconstruction. The bridge on the Utnutoi road above the school was in a very unsafe condition. Tho foundations were giving away and the stringers were perforated with decay. He had made temporary repairs to the bridge, which at tho most could only make it reasonably safe for light On the same road near the iforopito bridge an old woo dim culvert had collapsed and was likely to cause considerable damage to the road. He urgently recommended building a concrete culvert and had arranged to have metal carted to tho site in anticipation of an early start. The following were the engineer’s estimates for the work: Southie’s bridge £522 14s, Philpott’s bridge (Matahiori stream) £564 15s, culvert near No. 2 lino £56 10s, culvert No. 3 lino £55 10s, culvert and road deviation at forest reserve £7l 10s. Opawo Hill culvert £497 6s, Awabou South bridge £SOO Pohangina culvert £6O. bridge on the Umutoi road above the school £196 10s, culvert above Horopito bridge, Umutoi road north. £7O.
