SATURDAY EARLY CLOSING.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—As q, pioneer, and one who has successfully worked hard, first for Saturday closing at I'p.m., then for the total abolishment of tire “ late night,” lastly for 5.30 closing every week night, I rend the discussion reported in this morning’s Dominion of your local Retailers’ Association with very much interest.
Will you kindly allow me to express my very firm con|iction that unanimity is impossible; but, a very much firmer conviction founded on experience is this —let those who wish for these reforms lead the way and it will not be long till the others fall into line. It is up to employers to meet their assistants in every -way; bettor still, to anticipate wherever possible any legitimate desire; from a purely selfish point of view it pays. Again, speaking from long experience, customers very readily and pleasantly adapt themselves to changes.. I hope none of my fellow'traders will think I want to “butt in,” but those matters have for many years boon of the greatest interest to me; after twelve months’ trial of a hour working week I find wo can do quite as much—and easier—than in the bad old days of 51-2 hours.
Lot but one or, two of. your progressive traders in your progressive town lead the way—the rest will follow. —I am, etc., TI-lOS. PRINGLE. Wellington, January 9.
