NEW SOUTH WALES STATE ORCHESTRA.

As announced in another column, the famous New South Wales State Orchestra is visiting Palmcrston North, rendering one concert only on Monday, 19th January. It is anticipated that a good many more people will desire to hear this concert than the hall will accommodate, and it is therefore advisable to book seats early. The !x>x plan is now open at 11. K. Swallow s, bookseller, the Square. In view of the approaching visit to Palmerston North of the orchestra, the following extract from The Australian Musical News of November is interesting to all music lovers. Referring to the orchestra's visit- to Adelaide, this journal "says: "However much was expected, the expectations were more than realised, and it is not possible to describe in cold print the impressions Mr Henri Yorbruggncu and his fine body of instrumentalists loft behind them. Summed up,, it <u*m be termed wonderful. One is prone to write glibly of the success of a body of instrumentalists or singers, and omit tho person to whom most of the oredit is duo. That porson is tho conductor. No matter how good tho player* or singers may be, unless he ha.? them completely under control, and they reflect in the -playing or singing his conception of the moaning of the music being performed, the performance cannot be successful. The conductor ie tho pivot on which tho organisation revolves. This is the case with the orchestra under review. Mr Verbrugghen interprets the music, and every'little'movement of his baton or fingers has a moaning, which the band never fails to understand. Mr Verbrugghen does not seem to-miss a single point. Ho appears fp have magnetism in his personality, andjj obtains marvellous results. He creates an atmosphere directly he handles the baton,'- and it would be impossible for one to be in a. musical organisation under his control without, giving the best. The people of New South Wales are indeed most fortunate in having a gentleman of Mr Henri Verbrugghen's capabilities and enthusiasm.
