THE DOMINION'S PROSPERITY.
STILL MORE PRODUCTIVITY. Per Press Association. CHRISTCIIURCII, Jan. 8. In an address at the ceremony in connection with an extension to the freezing works at Kaiapoi to-day, the GovornorGenoral (tho Earl of Liverpool) said that New Zealand, in comparison with other countries, has, during tho last five years, boen suffering far less than any other part of the world, and its prosperity has not been diminished.
"It lies in the hands of its population whether or not that prosperity shall continue," he remarked. "Thore is a large dobt to meet. It cannot bo liquidated by a process of borrowing. It can only bo met by the* individual industry of oach member of tho community endeavouring to raise the output of trade and commerce, and so further incroaso tho total revenue of tho Dominion. So far as our domestic affairs are concerned, wo must be prepared to have to faco for some considerable timo a period of intenso competition with other countries, and it deponds entirely on ourselves how we shall emerge from the or'deal, There is no glamour in reconstruction, but the nation is even more in J;ho limelight than during the years of war. Personally, I have no fear that the zeal and energy of tho people will not moot the demand which is now boing made on their physical powers. They assisted to carry through the war to a successful con-' elusion, and I cannot doubt that tho present difficulties will bo surmounted by a like spirit of determination."
