The Rev. G. S. Cook has roturncd from his holiday and will take up his duties at St. Paul's Church on Sunday next. Mr 11. Dittmer and family, who havo resided at Ashhurst for tho past twenty years, left this morning for Wellington, en route to San Francisco, whero they will in future reside. Mr and Mrs R. E. Toogood, of Woodviilo, returned during tho week from a comprehensive tour of the South Island. They ore shortly taking up their abode in Palmerston North'. The death has occurred at Timaru of Mr George Watts, at the age of 68 years. Deceased was born in England and on migrating to New Zealand settled in Ashburton and later in Timaru.

Miss McNio, A.R.R.C, of Christchurch, who recently returned from aotive service, has been appointed matron of Waipukurau Military Hospital. Before leaving England she was matron at Codford Hospital. Mr Bernard Tripp, of-Timaru. has been appointed by tho Now Zealand Red Cross Executive a delegate for the Geneva conference,, which is to take place on March 2. Mr and Mrs Tripp leave this week by the Aruwa.

Mr John Duxbury, who came to the Dominion in 1862, died on Monday ai Robinson's Bay (Akaroa), at tho age oi 79 years. He was a pioneer settler and a contractor of Bank's Peninsula, and made tho first road to Pigeon Bay. i An old resident of the Auckland district, Mrs R. Cutforth, died at Whangarei on Saturday last, in her 80th year. Mrs Cutforth, was born at Cambridge, England, in 184G, and came out in tho sailing ship Hanover in 1862. Sir Arthur Fell, Coalition Unionist M.P. for Great Yarmouth (at one time of Nelson, New Zealand) has announced his intention of retiring from Parliament at the next general election. He /was first elected for Yarmouth-as a Conservative in 1906. Major D. Hewett, an old Palmer'stonian and a son of Mrs J. D. R. Hewitt, of this town, arrived in Palmerston North a few days ago on a short visit to hie relatives. Major Hewitt will leave New Zealand in about a month to rejoin his regiment in India. • The death occurred at a private hospital in_ Blenheim on Saturday morning of Mr Richard Corbott, who was a well-known and favourite figure in tho pastoral industry in Marlborough. Mr Corbctt was for many years manager of the Loefield sheep station, and, resigning that position in 1905, he took up the managership of the Bankhouse station, which ho conducted for several years'; Tho deceased, who never married, had attained tho age of 78 years.

Deceased made his first appearance on the stage at Dover onTJecember 26, 1882. at the age of 17, with a Charles Dickens Repertoire Co. He then toured for some time with various companies, and made his initia.l appearance in London at tho Princes Theatre on April 21, 1884. He was engaged almost continuously with various companies, and in January, 1895, went to the Lyceum under Sir Henry Irving, and later accomEanied him to America. He appeared at andringham before the late King Edward in 1905 in "A Privy Council," and at Windsor Castle in the same year in " The Widow Woos," of which he was part author.
