Le Matin states that the Protocol will be signed on Saturday afternoon,, together with the statement dealing with the reparation for the Scupa scuttling*. Diplomatic relations between Germany and the Allies will resume "after an exchange of the ratifications.
THE SCAPA SCUTTLINGS.

The Supreme Council has decided that Germany need hand over only 275.000 tons of harbour materials, instead of 300,000, in reparation for the Scapa scuttling?.
DEMOCRAT COMPROMISE
Australian-New Zealand Cable Association Received January 8. 9.5 a.m. WASHINGTON. Jan. 6. The Democrats have submitted a-serious compromise on the Treaty reservations to the Republican "Mild Reservationists." The Democrats claim that these reservations will receive forty-four Democratic votes.'
THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS

According to Mr Polk, Under-Secretary of State, when the Allies and Germany have ratified the Peace Treaty, President Wilson is ready to issue the first invitation for a meeting of the League of Nations. President Wilson's view fe that American ratification in this connection is immaterial.
THE ITALIAN TROUBLE

Mr Llovd George met Signor sitti at Charing Cross to-day. They will discuss the Fiume incident and Italy's financial situation, and the possible mandate over Constantinople and compensating Italy in Africa for Germany's colonies going to Britain and France.
THE ADRIATIC SETTLEMENT.
Australian-New Zealand Cable Association Received January 8, 8.45 a.m. LONDON, Jan- 5.
The Italian Premier and Foreign Minister liavo arrived to confer .with Mr Lloyd George prior to the conference with M. Clemenccau and Mr Lloyd George in Paris on tho Adiiatic questions. They have already interviewed M. Clemerieeau. They subsequently stated they anticipated the conference will result in a satisfactory solution of tho Italian problem. It is expected that Ivreo and a few islands will be handed over to Italy, that autonomy will be granted to Fiume and Zara, with guarantees for Italians in Jugoslavia and the neutralisation of the Adriatic coast.
