Dr and Mrs Greig returned from Taupo yesterday. Mr and Mrs C. F. Spoonor returned thi3 morning from a holiday spent in the Aucklanel province Tho death occurred suddenly at Pongaroa this week of Mrs J. M. Neilson. aged 19 years, the wife of a returned soldier. Mrs Neilson arrived in New Zealand in September last.

The death occurred at Wanganui on Tuesday of a well-known resident in the person of Mr B. Price, who had been secretary of the Fire Brigade and of the Foresters' Lodge. Senior-Sergeant 11. McCrorie, of Westport, is to be transferred to New Plymouth to take tho place of Sergeant Trchey, who has retired from the Force owing to ill - health. Mr Charles Berkeley was a visitor to Palmorston North to-day to make arrangements for the production here of tho J. C. Williamson comic opera "Yes Uncle" on Januarv 16.

At the meeting of the Hospital Board this morning a voto of sympathy was accorded to Mr J. Manning, the Board's head gardener at tho Old People's Home at Awapuni, who was seriously injured in a motor cycle accident this week.

Mr J. F. Griffon, of tho Napior tele phone exchange, diod on Tuesday last after a brief illness. He was admitted to the hospital that morning tor tho purpose of undergoing an operation, but ho failed to survive its effect, and passed away at the early age of 25 years. Miss Rattray and Miss Gcerin, of Dunedin, have eacli received from Their Majesties the King and Queen of Belgium, the bronze medal of Queen Elizabeth, with accompanying diploma, in recognition of services rendored for the relief of distress in Belgium during thei'war. The death occurred suddenly at Gisbornc yesterday afternoon of Mr Dan Barry, a prominent business man, and brother of Mr D. J. Barry. On tho previous day deceased had been advised by his doctor to cease work and take a holiday. The late Mr Barry had taken a prominent part in tho activities of the sports clubs in tho Gisborne district. Mr J. E. Allen, who has been transferred from Nelson to Palmcrston North to fill the position of Deputy Public Trustee, is a well known musician. He was for years a prominent member of the Nelson Amateur Opt ratio Socioty, and lately took a leading part in "Paul Jones," which recently completed a season in Blenheim and Nelson. Mr Allen's attainments will undoubtedly bo of service to tho local Operatic Society. Mr W. J. Rainbow, F.LS.. F.E.S., entomologist at. tho Australian Museum *-t Sydney, died recently. He served an apprenticeship on the Wanganui Herald, but his heart was never in his work, insects boing his hobby. He was regarded as the loading authority on araneidao in the Southern Hemisphere, and published sixtyseven scientific papers dealing with original research into the life history of hitherto unknown or undeacribed scorpions and spiders. The Rev. \V. P. Grove, vicar of St. Mary's Church, and formerly of St. Peter's, Terrace End, returned to the Dominion this week after a visit of about six months to England. Mr Grove was met by several of his parishioner's, who gave him a hearty welcome home. Mrs Grove and j family are expected to reach New Zealand | in April. The Rev. J. Blackburno, who has been locum tenens for Rev. Grove, will take charge of the Anglican Church at To Horo.
