MAGISTRATE'S COURT RETURNS.
A - return of the chamber work in the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North for the 12 months ended December 31st shows 'hat 12 applications for recommendations under the Aliens’ Act for naturalisation papers were granted and four were refused, dismissed, or withdrawn. Other figuies were as follows; Applications' to take evidence granted 12, sitting of Assessment Court one, attachment order one, applications for exemptions from drill or parade under Defence Act granted six, refused or withdrawn nine, applications for adoption of children granted 10, land agents licenses granted 36, applications for certificates of fitness under Sharebrokers’ Act granted three. During the quarter ended December 31st 156 males and seven females were arrested. Summonses were issued against 145 males and 24 females (including 19 males and one female juvenile). The Justices sat on 47 occasions and the Magistrate 30 times. Criminal fines collected amounted to £175 Bs, and Court costs totalled £3l 2s 6d. In the civil division of the Magistrate’s Court 203 plaints were issued during the past three months for a total amount of £3203 IBs 7d. The number of claims heard was 103, involving £1427 2s lOd, and £1284 10a 7d was recovered. Applications heard in chambers numbered 34, orders made were 20, distress warrants issued 17, judgment summonses issued 45, orders made on judgment summonses 15, and the number _of warrants of committal issued was six. Civil foes paid in stamps amounted, to £133 17s, and licensing foes paid in stamps £8 3s.
