ANOTHER MOTOR SMASH.

MOTOR. CYCLE AND CAR COLLIDE

CYCLIST SUFFERS TWO BROKEN ARMS. A collision between _ a motor car and a. motor cycle, with a. side cur attached, occurred last night at about nine o’clock on ihe Fox ton Line, between Palmerston ISorth and Awupuni, near tho junction of Maxwell Lino., The accident was attended with mjnrios of a.serious nature to tho cyclist, Mr John Manning, employed.as a gardener at the Old People’s Home, Awapuni, who was in a semiconscious condition when picked up and was found to have sustained two broken arms and injuries to the chest up till the present he has not been able to make a statement as to the cause of tho mishap. From information received by tho Police and a statement from tho driver of tho motor car, Mr Stanley Moffatt, Palmerston North, it appears that the two vehicles both had lights burning when aproaching one another. Tho road at the point where tho collision occurred is about 30ft. wide so that there was ample space for a clear passage. The car was proceeding from Foxton towards Palmerston. North and tho motor cycle from Palmerston North towards Awapuni.' There were three people in tho car and the side car attached to the bicycle was unoccupied. The driver says that ho observed tho light of tho approaching bicycle and pulled off to the left o( the road. The bicycle continued on its course and Mr Moffatt, with some prescience of the collision, applied tho brakes with the result that his car had almost stopped when the bicycle struck it a slanting blow. Starting from the sidelight tho bicycle tore off the spare wheel, left a rip along the side of the car and removed the rear mud-guard. The front of the car was not marked up to the wind screen, which was broken. The motor cyclist was immediately picked np in a semi-conscious condition and icmoved in the car to Dr Lett’s surgery. It 'was then found that one arm had been broken at the wrist and tho other at the elbow. The sufferer had also received a severe bruising about the chest On enquiry at the hospital this afternoon it .was learned that. Mr Manning was suffering from a compound fracture of tho right elbow and a fractured left wrist, as well as a number of wounds and abrasions on the logs and about the hotly. He is doing as well as can be expected.
