DESTRUCTIVE FIRE.
BUSINESS PREMISES IN NELSON DESTROYED. SEVERE LOSSES. Per Press Association. NELSON, Jan. 3. A disastrous fire occurred in a wooden building in Trafalgar street early this morning. It resulted in the destruction of M. P. Webster's, provision merchants; part of Trathen and Co., drapers and milliners; and Shield and Co., wine and spirit merchant. The fire brigade fought with great determination, but the; flames having too good a hold when discovered spread rapidly in the wooden buildings. Mr "Webster is a heavy loser, none or bis stock being saved. „,.,-,, A'good deal was saved from Shield s premises. Trathen's clothing and millinery departments, in brick buildings, were* .saved, but the main building, together with reserve stocks, was totally destroyed. Trathen's loss runs into thousands.
The origin of the .fire is' a mystery. It is believed to have started near Webster's premises. The insurances are:—Trathen's stock £6850, building £750; Webster's stock £7OO, building £600; Shield's building, £200.\ The insurance on the latter's stock is not obtainable.
