ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
A well known President, of South. Tara-
naki in the person of Mr W. Slattery met .with a I painful accident on the 'Stratford racecourse this week. It appears that Mr, Slattery, prior to the commencement'of the racing, was standing near a, niotor car, which was backing into position, when one of the front wheels struck'and knocked him over. 'As. a>, result of. ; his. fall, M l ' Shittery's leg was broken. -, ' The i body of George S. Hawkins, a married" man, .who disappeared at 'Sumner on Monday;, was recovered on Thursday, having been washed upon the beach. Mr Hawkins nvent for a bathe and afterwards retiirned to his wife, who,was sitting on the beach. Later he again went into the Isea, and was not seeni alive again. The police, made inquiries, but were unalblerto find anyone who had' seen the man in the water. Dragging operations wme kept up till a late hour at, night, but no trice of the body was then found.
SHOCKING FATALITY
KILLED BY MAIN TRUNK , EXPRESS.
Per Press Association. TATJMARUNUI, Jan. 2. Crisp, single, a returned soldier, a native of England, was killed on the railway line between Jtakahi and Owhango by the, north-bound express on New Year's Eve. Deceased 'owned a returned soldier's farm, and was making his wav home, from Kakahi along the line when he was overtaken- suddenly 'by the express and killed instantly; The body was badly mutilated.
DALMATIAN HANGS HIMSELF.
WHANGAREI, Jan. 2
The police have advised that a. Dalmatian, named Jack Begorich, committed suicide by hanging at Waikiekie yesterday afternoon. >
FALL FROM MOTOR CAR..
TAURANPA, Dec. 30
A painful accident occurred to Mr D.. Walker last evening. He was stepping out of a motor car which was slowing down, when his coat caught in an obstruction, and he was thrown to the ground. One wheel of the car passed oyer hi« left leg. which was much lacerated above the knee. Fortunately no bone* s were broken. Mr "Walker was removed to the hospital.
ELDERLY MAN COLLAPSES.
WHANGARET, Dec. 30. An old settler, Mr John McLeod. about 66 years of age, died suddenly at Kauri yesterday. Deceased had carried a bag of about 701b weight from the road to his residence in the afternoon. After placing /he baisoc in the kitchen he collapsed and died sioon afterwards.
Dr. iGood tfas called in, and certified that was due to heart failure. Mr McLeod, who has resided ,at Kauri since he wns a hoy. leaves a widow,,four daughters, and two sons.
