CABLE OFFICERS? NEW YEAR.
By Electric Teiegraph.-Copyrigh». Australian New Zealand CabW Association FANNING ISLAND, Jan. 1. The New Year sports gathering at the Pacific cable station was an immense success. Two hundred Gilbert Islanders enthusiastically competed in boxing, sprinting, mat-making, and a tug of war. This lonely atoll in midPacific is the temporary home of the New Zealand, Australian and English cable officers. Notwithstanding the strenuous present-day cable work, they find time to display an Anzac keenness for sport, and give an example to the natives of what has gone far in Empire building. The concluding event was a tug of war. in which the New Zealand and Australian operators met. In the final the Maorilanders secured a closely contested victory.
