At the Orient Steam Navigation Company's i meeting, Sir Kenneth Anderson said that until the future of the mail service was settled and the Commonwealth s wishes known, they were reluctant to commit themselves regarding the particular type or design of vessel they would build. The Commonwealth Government's policy of largely developing its own fleet would only discourage the private enterprise and initiative, which for 40 years had provided Australia with services consistently exceeding the requirements of the trade, and . unsurpassed in quality and cheapness by any trade in the world. If the State set itself to oppress and discourago the individual trades it must be prepared eventually to cover the whole ground. National isation of industry would destroy the British Empire just as certainly as individual freedom and enterprise created it. Sir Kenneth Anderson hinted at the necessity for raising saloon farce, owing to the continued increase in the working expenses of the company.
