Carey, Director of the Northern Territory, was examined before the Commission of Inquiry at length regarding his relations with Dr Gilruth and ;Vestcy's Meat Company. ' Asked'if Dr Gilruth's first'policy was not funning and closer settlement Witness said that he. found the pelicy already made and had to carry it out.. As a result the Daly river Government settlement was established.
Asked if when Vesteys started operations the Administrator changed Ins policy, witness denied such was the ease.
He was then asked ■if Dr Gilruth and a man named Palmer took lip 3000 acres at Daly river because it was the key to the position, and Dr Gilruth desired to push settlers out. Witness said: "No; other lots were available, but no one took them up." Questions were asked regarding tho payment of'certain moneys to Palmer and Dr Gilruth when their partnerslrip < in the lease, was dissolved. Mr Carey denied that the alleged dissolution was a mere blind, and stated that Dr Gilruth held a half-share in tho lease which was issued in tho name of Palmer. Asked why Dr Gilruth did not issue the lease to Palmer and himself witness replied'that as far as the Land Board was concerned it dealt with Palmer only. Asked if Palmer did not get special conditions Mr Carey said : "No, except that tho rent was £5 higher than for other blocks." At the sitting of the Northern Territory Commission Mr Justice Ewing commented Boyorely on the practice of locking up aboriginal witnesses for _ the Crown along with criminals during trials. ••■'■ Tho .explanation given was that the blacks might be terrorised if left free.
