A Molbourno cablo states that Sir Lauchlan McKinnon has retired from tho general managership of the Melbourne Argus. Mr A. Holtz will succocd him. Mr C. M. Snow, a well-known American editor, author, and poet, is attending tho annual conference of tho Seventh Day Adventists in Mastertori.
• Captain G. W. Ward'rop, who has been an inmate of the Pahiatua Hospital for a few weeks, returned to his home at Woodvflie on Tuesday. -
DetectivfiySergoant Ward, who has been stationed at Napier for a number of yours, has boen promoted to fill the position of chief detective, recently vacated by Mr Doddain. I
Sergeant Murphy, of tho Police Force, for many years a well known figue on tho Wellington wharves, is retiring on pension at the end of tho month. Ho has boen in illhealth for over a year. Colonel C. M. Gibbon, formerly Chief of tho General Staff of New Zealand, fis low living at his,-home, Sleedagh, Wexford. It is his intention to retire from the army. 'Aldorman Richards has bocri appointed Lord Mayor of Sydney by tho New, South Wales Cabinet, thus ending tho deadlock caused by the tie in the voting of tho members of the City Council. Rev. S. F. Hunter, M.A., 8.D., of St. Paul's, Oamaru, has boen awarded,-by the Melbourne College of Divinity, firstclass honours in the Honours B.D.' group of Biblical and Historical Theology.'.
The many friends of Mr and Mrs J, 11. Bennett, Kauwhata, will bo pleased to hear that their son H.erzol, who met with, a gun accident on Monday last, is progressing satisfactorily. The death-is announced by Press. Association message from Dunedin of Mr Alexander Burt, one of tho founders of A. and T. Burt, Ltd., ironfounders.' The deceased gentleman, who was 79 years of ago, arrived in Otago in 1861.
The death occurred yesterday in Kaikqura of the Rev. Father Morris. The-deceased priest was educated in tho Maynooth College, Ireland, and arrived in New, Zealand fcboitt five-years ago. He had never enjoyed good health, and his death at tlm early ago of thirty years was' not altogether unexpected.
The death occurred at Hawera, on Saturday last, of Mr L. A. Macdonald, F.R.A.S., through an attack of. pneumonia. For over 20 years Mr Macdonald had been a member of the Astronomical Society, and held somo reputation as an amateur astronomer. For tho past three or four years the deceased gentleman had been employed in legal work in Hawera.
