A LIVE SHELL.
MOS.\IAN # COUNCIL'S ESCAPE. , When a shell which landed in front of General Ryrie's dug-out on Giillipoli did not explode thp general, thankful for his narrow escape, thought he would show, his ■gratitude, by sending it to [Mosman (Sydney) as a trophy for the municipality. Referring to the gift at a welcome to Sir Granville u.t tho. Mosman Town Hall recently, the* Mayor (Alderman Walker) said there wns a suspicion that General Eyrie, like the 'lucal Progress Association, liud a desire to /completely change the personne' of the council, for, after having been polished and mounted, the shell stood for some weeks in the council chambers before it was discovered that the charge had not been removed! ■ '_ General Ryrie explained. "Of course," lie said, amid laughter, "if that shell hadn't been a 'dud' I might not have been , hero to-night. I thought it would make a nice little present for i\Josiiinii, and did not worry about such a triviality;as seeing that the charge was extracted. But I fissure you. I really hud"no intention of wiping the council out, and I congratulate the 'Mayor and aldernien \jpon their narrow escape."
