The Bank of England returns show that the coin and bullion held total £90,291,000 with a reserve of £17,693,0011, the proportion of reserve to liabilities being 11.51 per cent. Notes in circulation total £92,149,000. Public deposits amount to £20,338,000 and other deposits to £133,361,000. r lhe Government securities held total £63,675,000 and other securities £85,179,000. Short loans are quoted at £4 7s 6d per cent.; three months’ bills at £5 15s. The rates of exchange in London are: On Paris, 40.50 francs to £l. Stockholm, 17.82 kroner to £l. Christiania, 18.60 kroryer to £l. Calcutta, 25Jd to the rupee. Montreal, 410 cents to the £l. Now York, S79i cents to the £l. Stock Excliange _ quotations: —Queensland loan 35s premium; Waihi Junction, buyers 14s, sellers 15s.
CANTERBURY MARKETS. Per Press Association. ‘ CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 30. Operations iu grain and produce lines are practically suspended during'tho holidays. The demand from the North Island for chuff lias ceased. Tho harvest-having commenced in oat-growing localities in tho north, there is little business in oats, but prices remain firm at recent quotations. Cuttting has commenced in the Amborley and Ashburton districts and in a few days will be general throughout tho province. _ It is considered that the cocksfoot production from tho bays will bo reduced this year and in view of the probability of increased supplies being required in tho North Island, on account of the resumption on a bigger, scale of tho settlement of busli country, this seed may rise in value.
