BOXING.
LEWIS DEFEATS MATT WELLS. LONDON, Dec. 28. A remarkable boxing programme was provided at the Albert Hall, when two 20-round matches and one 12-round match were fought. Kid Lewis, ot America, beat Matt Wells in the 12th round. Wells unexpectedly retired, explaining that he was weakened, by loss of blood from cuts on the face. It was a keen contest, and Lewis fought confidently.
Pal Moore (America) defeated Eugene Griqui (France) in the 14th round, Criqui retiring after a squabble with the referee about an alleged foul. Johnny Griffiths knocked out Francis Charles in the third round.
Carpentier, having flown from Paris, sparred four rounds with his second, Lennaers, giving a demonstration ot how he knocked out Beckett, who was present. Tibby Watson, of Australia, who has been ill, is progressing favourably, and will meet de Ponthieu in February in the Albert Hall. PARIS WANTS DEMPSEY. PURSE OF £58,000 OFFERED. LONDON, Dec. 20. A Paris message states that a new offer of £48,000. plus a quarter of the cinema rights making a total of £58,000, lias been cabled to Dempsey, the world’s heavyweight champion, for a fight in Pans with Carpentier.
