ATTEMPT TO WRECK TRAIN.
A SENSATIONAL INCIDENT,

An attempt to wreck tho Alexandria express was frustrated in a sensational manner. The driver of a slow train saw several heaps of stones and raced his train forward just in time to warn the express, the engine of which was derailed.
.Two British majors were killed in triba lighting in which a thousand Soudanese utshed a Hritish post and slaughtered .tin defenders* The attacks were beaten off. The incident is not connected with the Egyptian unrest
A THRILLING STORY. Australian-New Zealand Cable Association. CAIRO, Doc. 26. Details of the deaths of Majors. Stignand (West Kents) and White (Essex Regiment) provide a thrilli&g story ot British frontier fighting.. Major White, commanding the equatorial battalion, was engaged in exploration from Tombe amongst disaffected tribes which recently attacked British posts, _ compelling their .retirement, and killing twelve. Major White re-established,.the posts, but was heavily attacked on the night of November loth. In severe hand to hand fighting the enemy suffered heavy loss. Our liases were* seven killed and nine wounded. Major Stighand, Governor of' Mongolia, with a further com-pany,-joined Major White, and proceeded to clear up the country. The rest is unknown, but on December 13th a mutilated telegram was received reporting that a thousand of the enemy on December Bth rushed the advance guard of a column which was marching in open square formation through thick grass seven feet high, driving it upon the main body. Fierce hand to hand fighting ensued, and Majors White and Stignand, a captnin, 22 rankers, and 4 carriers were killed. The enemy were driven off, and the column managed to withdraw, after a five days' march through long grass at high water level. The Wadis are delaying a punitive expedition.
