MANAWATU RACING CLUB’S MEETING. IIRST DAY. CUP WON BY KILRUSH. FITZHERBERT HANDICAP, ARROWSMITH. Yesterday the opening day’s racing in connection with the summsr meeting of the Mnnuwatu Racing Club was disposed of before the largest crowd oyer recorded on the Awapuni course, which included visitors from all parts of the Dominion. There wore several heavy showers during the afternoon, but it did not affect the track, which was in splendid order. Racing was of a very interesting order, the lielda being large, whilst the public had considerable difficulty in sorting out the winners. Mr J. E. Ilenrys, the handicappcr, should bo well pleased with the results. Throughout the afternoon the secretary and ins assistants worked in harmony, and carried out their respective duties m an excellent stylo, which went a long way in bringing the meeting to the success it attained. , . . , Mr J. R. Stanford carried out his duties as judge to the satisfaction of everybody, and Mr Angus Keith was in capital form at the barrier, the big fields being dispatched in remarkably fine order. Backers made a bad start. Hallowvonia and Admiral Advance were in most favour for the Trial Plate, but the winner turned up in Sweet Song, who paid a good dividend. The daughter of Danube is trained by T. George. , ... Statuette showed a lot of pace m the Gillies Hack, and will win more races this season. The Cup provided an interesting contest. All < oriso (All Black —Martian Princess) showed some peace, and is worth noting for races ahead.

The English-bred Arcowsmith put up a meritorious performance in the Fitzherbcrt Handicap. Ho was slow in leaving the murk, but quickly worked his way to the frpnt, eventually winning in such easy style in the fast time of 1.13, that many sportsmen arc of the opinion that ho would keep Gloaming busy over a similar distance. , One of the features of the sport was the support accorded to the totalisator machines, through which the sum of £61,625 was handled as against £40,240 fqr the corresponding day last year.
