Ono of the oldest residents of Pacroa .(Thames district), Mr John Wullonora Thorp, died last week at the age of 82 ycars Mr Thorp was a son of tho late Mr Joshua Thorp, of Sydney, and was born at W’ullanora, New South Wales. He was connected with the earliest goldmining operations in the Thames district and in Otago. Accompanied by the native chief, Tekepa Raharahi, Mr Thorp found gold at Rotekohu, and also near Karangahako. which was the first gold found in that part of tho district. As a volunteer he served under Captain Jackson at Raglan and at Wnipa. Captain Walter H. Paterson, master stevedore for tho Shaw Savill and Albion Coy., at Lyttelton, died at Christchurch last week following an operation. Captain Paterson hud a long career at sea. Ho served his time in sailing ships, and subsequently joined tho White Star Line of Liver pool, in which, as a junior officer, ho was contemporary with tho late Captain Smith, of the Titanic, and several of the proaem senior commanders. He brought out from England a small vessel of 124 tons for the Union Steamship Company of New Zoa land, occupying 120 days. For some time Captain Paterson sailed as chief officer in tho Union Company's service, and subse qurntly was appointed pilot at the Bluff, and later to tho position ho held at the time of his decease.
