Our forces have advanced five milos into tho Mahsud country, from Jandola, since tho 18th, capturing -positions after stiff fighting. Twenty aeroplanes accompanied tho column, a bombing machino gunning tho country ahead. Tho chief surprise for tho Mahsuds was our new howitzer, which is a most compact and convenient gun. Much sniping is going on. Wo sufferod casualties in the attack on Surkai Ridge. An official communique, reporting on the failure of negotiations, states that considerable opposition to our advance on Makin is expected.

Tho Derajat column from Jandola, on tho 18th, engaged in tho biirgest battle tho ex ; pedition thus far has produced. The burkni Ridgo was held by 2000 Mahsuds, whde the entrance to Shahur and the hills westward of Jandola were held by a mixed force ot Waziris and Mahsuds. The enemy was driven from the ridgo in the direction ot Spinakaikuch and the hills, which we occuP The artillery and aeroplanes continue to harass tho tribesmon, who have suffered heavily. Our casualties were light.
