A CONSTABLE'S REWARD.

At last night's meeting of the Borough Council a Flier was read from SeniorSergeant Eraser to the eilect that 11. Bennett had been fined £5 and | costs tor damaging a rose bush ni the Square, he having taken roses oil it, and stating that, Constable O'Reilly was the officer who had detected him. ; , ■ Cr. Orabb said that the police should be commended for their vigilance. The offence was a particularly difiicult one to detect and it was a very mean one. Ho wished that it was permissible to thank the Magistrate for having made the fine such a substantial one. The constable who had detected the offence—Constable O'Reilly—he considered, should be given the reward of £lO which the Council offered for anyone who brought such offenders to book. Ci\ Eliott seconded the motion and added that it was gratifying to know that tho liian who had been fined was fairly wellknown. The Mayor expressed the opinion that the police should be asked in the letter of thanks which would bo sent to them to keep an eye on the Esplanade gardens. Cr. Lancaster observed that £lO seemed a big reward and that a "liver" would have met the case. Cr. Crabb: Ido not grudge the £lO and I would not grudge it again to-morrow if a man was caught in the act. It was then decided that the constable should be rewarded with the £lO in recognition of his vigilance and further that tho police should be thanked for the action taken and asked not to relax their efforts.
