OTAKI, Dec. 12
The death occurred at the Wellington Hospital last night of Mr Tan Teiwiata, veil-known in Otaki and district where he ms resided since childhood. Tan recently ontracted pneumonia, and later was allotted to tho hospital in a. serious condiion. Deceased, who was employed on the tali' of the Otaki Mai! for some years, was i bright young ’ man, full of sporting in•tincts, and his death has naturally caused a shock to his many friends.
At the monthly meeting of the Otaki Fh Brigade a donation of £1 was received froi Mr W. G. Hart ill in recognition of tl
brigade’s services at the recent fire ai Otaki railway.
A successful garden party in aid of the Manakau Anglican Church was held at Major Tatum’s grounds on Wednesday afternoon. The opening ceremony was performed by Mrs W, 11. Field. The takings amounted to £3B arid the expenses will
bo small. Eulogistic comment was freely made on the capable manner in which the lion. sec. (Mrs I’. A. D. Mickle) carried out her duties.
Air “Bob” Cooper, a returned soldier, who is very well known at Manukay, was married recently to Miss Myrtle McKay, of .Vellington, the ceremony being performed >y the Rev. Shircr. at St. James’ Church, Newtown.
, OTAKf, Dec.- 15. Mr “Mick” Donovan, a well known
resident of Paraparaurnu, is reported to he missing. On Thursday week ho loft in a 'annch by himself for the purpose of visiting Wellington, and it is feared that ho was caught in a squall. Constable Sullierly left for Paraparaurnu this morning to investigate. Air Donovan is an old sea-
faring man, but as he has been absent so long fears are entertained for his safety. On account of heavy ruin the visit of County Councillors to the Weraroa State farm, to have taken place on Saturday, was Jiostponed, and will be made probably next month.
Heavy, but very welcome rain, fell in this district on Saturday, and is having a beneficial effect on pastures. Tasman road is to have further attention at the hands of the County Council and should bo in good order at an early date. At present it is very rough. The funeral of tho lute Dr. Hiithwaite look place this afternoon, when his remains were laid to rest in the public cemetery. The cortege was a lengthy and representative one, while the floral tributes wore so Humorous that cars wore requisitioned for tho purpose of carrying thorn. Tho late Dr. Hiithwaite, who was one of Nature’s gentlemen, practised for some time in England, and afterwards had a large practise at Capetown. Some twelve years ago ho came to Otaki, where ho has resided over since. He was a man of sterling qualities, a warm favourite and loved by all. During the epidemic of 1918 bo worked trojan-like, and despite two attacks attended .to; the crying needs of the large district. A month ago lie was in indifferent health, bat two weeks ago wag'about and quite cheerful. Later'ho was-advised by leading specialists to enter a private, hospital in Welington, where an operation of a wry delicate nature was performed. Ho failed to rally and passed away on Friday afternoon. Deceased, who was only 53 years of age, leaves a widow and grown-up daughter, tho latter at present being in England. The death occurred yesterday of Miss AT. Cook, daughter of Air Patihona Cook, who has been in failing health for some time.
