HUI AROHA AT GISBORNE.

GISBORNE, April 9. There were enthusiastic scenes at the “hui aroha” to-day, when a public welcome was accorded tho Maori soldiers. Addresses were delivered by the Bishop of Waiapu and the Hon. A. T. Ngata. Tribal welcomes followed and speeches by Hon. Ngata and Sir James Carroll, Lady Carroll and others, interspersed with songs and dances. In tho course of his address, Bishop Waiapu suggested the re-erection of Te Ante College as a memorial to tho soldiers. In the afternoon tho troops came to Gisborne to assist in the unveiling oi a granite monument to Wi Pero. There was a religions service in Maori by the Native clergy, and addresses in Maori of eulogy of the deceased by Sir James Carroll, Hon. Ngata and Chaplain Wainohu.’

Several chiefs spoke, requesting His Excellency to liberate tho Waikato Natives imprisoned for refusing military service. One speaker asked His Excellency to use his influence, to have the lakes case withdrawn, and the Arawa’s rights to tho lakes recognised. Lord Liverpool eulogised and welcomed tho Pioneers, and added that he would bring tho speakers’ requests before his Ministers.
