Mr IT. G. Smith, clerk of the Court at Danuovirke, is being transferred to Hastings. The Hon. Sir W. Fraser, Minister for Public Works, returned to Wellington by the Auckland express this morning. A very old colonist of New Zealand, Mr William Morton, sour,, died at his residence, Onehunga, Auckland, a few days ago, in his 86th year. Mr James Darroch, who had been a resident of the Wairarapa for nearly 50 years, died at Wellington this week, aged 84 years. For the two seats on the Wellington Harbour Board as representatives of Wairarapa, Messrs C. E. Daniell, T. Hodgins, and A. D. McLeod have been nominated. A Sydney cablegram announces that Bishop Stephens has been elected Bishop of Newcastle in place of Bishop Stretch, who resigned. Mrs Trow, of Whakaronga, has received advice that her son, Rfm. J. T. Trow, is returning by H.M.T. Uorinthic, due at Lyttelton on or about 22nd April. Cable advice has been received by Mr and Mrs S. Sutton, of Rangiotu (lato of Hokowbilu), that their. second son, Lancc-Corpl. W. A. Sutton, will arrivo in Auckland on April 23rd. ■ A cablegram from London states that Bishop Gore has resigned because of tiro Church Council’s decision that baptism instead of confirmation will constitute the franchise for voting on church subjects Ho also desires more leisure for writing and speaking. Nows has been received of the death in London from acute pneumonia of Mr Eugene D. Victory, formerly of the staff of the Wellington Evening Post. Deceased, who. was only 19 years of ago, had soon service during the war as a wireless operator. i Mr P. J McGovern, an officer of tha railway service, died in the Wellington hospital on Tuesday ovoning after a short illness. Deceased, who joined the service iii' 1896, was entrusted by.the management with the control of the railwayman's enlistments during the war. • Mr Henry Barltrop, who died at Nelson on Sunday at the advanced ago of 91 yeats, arrived in New Zealand by the ship Indemnity at the latter end of 1842. and had resided .in Nelson since 1853. Ho celebrated his diamond wedding three years ago. Amongst the surviving sons is Mr John Edward Barltrop, of Feilding.
