Client, though ho ran disappointingly at Riccarton, is being kept going in view of contesting the. Auckland Cup. Mr J. D. Donovan has been appointed, starter to the Hawke's Ray Jockey Club. A few years ago Mr Donovan was well known as a successful horseman. A Southern writer states that Hoetor Gray continues to make satisfactory progress, but it will bo some weeks before ho can leave the private hospital. All the foals at the Highden stud farm, about a dozen in number, are looking remarkably well, and there is no doubt they aro receiving the best of attention. There aro some particularly smart youngsters among them. Biplane returned to New Zealand by a recent boat from Australia. He has been sent to Mr G. D. Greenwood's station, in North Canterbury, where he will have a good spell, after which another attempt may be made to train him.

Mr Arthur Manson, secretary of the Manawatu Trotting Club, uiio has been suffering from the ruling malady for tho past fortnight, is making satisfactory progress, and expects to be about again in a few days. Nominations for all events in connection with tho Manawatu Trotting Club close with tho secretary (Mr A. Manson), on Saturday, November 30. Owners would bo well advised to post their entries in plenty of iimo in view of the telegraph restrictions on racing matters during the epidemic. Local trotting owners are busy now 1 preparing their charges for tho .Manawatu Trotting Club's fixture, which will bo held at the Awapuni racecourse on 'Saturday, December 28. Among the horses that go through the usual routine on the tracks daily are Plain Rose, Warlock, Lylock, The Bath, ' Proud Boy, Speculator and Lovelock. J. Coyle with Kipling and J. .Morris ! with Tit Willow and All Over intend ■returning homo again as soon as trans- < port arrangements permit, j A. J. McFlinn has sufficiently recovered to bo about again. Tho wellknown horseman had a very close call, ; and is still very shaky from the effects ; of his attack, having lost nearly a stone i and a-half in weight.

Among tlio deaths announced on Monday from influenza was Victor Cotton, at the age of 29 years. In his young days he was a capable light-weight rider. He was attached to Sir George Clifford's stable for some time, and scored many wins in the blue and gold chequers, among them being the Wellesley Stakes, Auckland Foal Stakes and Canterbury Champagne Stakes on Kirriemuir; Canterbury Metropolitan Handicap and Wanganui Cup on Quarryman ; and Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap on Signalman. His ridiny career was brief, however, increasing weight incapacitating him for a jockey'? life, and for some years past he had been out of tho racing game altogether.
