Two passengers who are convalescent will remain on board. The- passengers and crow were allowed to laud after inhalation treatment. Two soldiers died on Sunday, but not from Influenza, and were buried at sea on Monday. ON THE OTIRA LINE. GREYMOUTH, Nov. 21. A relief train visited tire Otira line. Many serious cases were disclosed. Four bud eases were brought into the hospital. One expired on the journey. Three were exceptionally severe and unable to be removed. The business places have been further closed till the end of the week. There arc many fresh cases but not so virulent. ON THE WEST COAST. HOKITIKA, Nov. 23.. Tho epidemic for the week ending yesterday carried off four town residents, including a recently returned soldier, six country residents and one visitor. In tho same period two town and two country residents died outside of Westland. Tho epidemic is now worse in tho country. Only one medical man is available for tho whole of )Vcstlaml, and his services are confined to the town, where the local and auxiliary hospitals are situated. A medical student sent to render assistance lion l had to go to bed immediately on his arrival with tho complaint. It is considered that qualified medical advice for country patients would ho of great value at this stage, and representations are being made to the Government. The local organisation includes a fine body of willing workers who are assisting the authorities in every way possible. SEVERE IN TARANAKI. RAWER A, Nov. 21. The epidemic is very serious in Hawera and South Taranaki owing to tho insufficiency of medical men and nurses. The doctors at Kaponga and Manaia arc down. Of three practising in Hawera two are ill. The hospital is full of patients and the Show buildings and St. Mary’s School have been requisitioned and also arc full. The country position is made more difficult by (ho spread of the disease among tho Maoris. The mortality has been comparatively light, but every activity in the district except that of lighting the epidemic has been paralysed. The local authorities are active and are doing splendid work. From noon to-day town has been closed to free more people to do voluntary work. FEWER NOTIFICATIONS IN OTAGO. DUNEDIN, Nov.. 21. Otago and Southland notifications arc 32 to-day, three fewer than yesterday. The cases at Dunedin Hospital arc 21-1. The increases arc five cases and six deaths fewer than any previous day recently. ABATING AT GISBORNE. GISBORNE, Nov. 21. The influenza epidemic shows some abatement in serious eases, though the disease is still rampant. The disease is present in a milder form on the East Coast. Thirty deaths have occurred in Gisborne during the past twenty days. At the request of the Borough authorities, business places are closing at 3 p.m. daily for fumigating purposes. The regular passenger steamer service to Gisborne is still in abeyance. The tram service has ceased from to-day for a week. The town has been thoroughly organised, and additional inhalation chambers are to be installed in town and at the freezing works. EFFECT ON SHIPPING. SYDNEY, Nov. 21. Th c crew of the Atua has agreed to sail to-day, provided the Now Zealand call is abandoned. Thc Mocraki pays off her crow to-morrow, as the shipping companies arc unable to give sailing dates. RELIEF FROM MELBOURNE. MELBOURNE, Nov. 21. In response to thc Government of Now Zealand’s appeal for assistance in regard to tho outbreak of influenza at Samoa, a steamer left Melbourne immediately. She is expected to clear Sydney on Saturday with medical officers and necessary equipment. Thc Government control of shipping continues until peace is signed.
