THE GALLANT SEAFORTHS.
REFUSE TO SURRENDER. How tlio Highlanders reply to the call to surrender was .shown to the consternation 'of the Germans, when a number of them had crept up and surrounded a platoon of the Seaforths. According to tho story told in the London Gazette, in announcing n number of D.C.M.s awarded, Corporal A. Morrison, who was in charge of the platoon, leapt up when the enemy had got within 20 yards of him and had called on his party to surrender, and, calling on his men to follow, emptied his magazine into tho enemy and then attacked them with bayonet and rifle butt. They retired in disorder, and by his courage and daring conduct he was able to save his men from capture. Another of tho Seaforths, Sergeant J. Neilson, when he had taken charge of a platoon through the officer being killed, found the ground unsuitable for a Lewis gun position, and lay down and ordered tho gunner to use his back as a rest. By lus disregard of personal danger and unflinching courage he inspired his men, who wero nearly exhausted by live days' continuous lighting, and they held on to their positions. An enemy machine gun was harassing tho retirement of some of our parties, and Private Miller, of the Seaforths, went back alone, and, creeping from shell-hole to shell-hole under tho fire of machine guns and snipers from the enemy positions, he managed to get within 200 yards of the guns. He steadily picked off the machine gunners, and finally silenced the gun. As he retired he" picked up a Lewis gun, and from his advanced position inflicted very heavy casualties on tho enemy, and kept down their lire until his comrades were established in their new position. ____ PASS YOUR UNPLEASANT HOUSE HOLD TASKS ON TO "KLEAN-IT."
