At a recent meeting of the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce. Messrs F. S. Gold high,am and M. A. We put before these gentlemen the unfair eomlitions under which Foxton and the surrounding districts were working, owing to the enforcement, of handling charges at. Foxton, other ports such as Wanganui, Patea and Nelson being exempt. “Mr lliley pointed out that the Foxton handling charges had to be levied in consequence of the Harbour Board taking away their revenue derived from wharfages. However, he stated that, onr request that Foxton should be placed on the same looting as the other ports mentioned was reasonable, and he considered that we had made out a good case for some amelioration of present, conditions. He further promised that an officer would make a special report to him concerning tho handling of cargo and charges at the ports of Patea, Wanganui and Foxton, and on receipt of this would give our representations most favourable consideration, indicating that Foxton would not he placed in any worse, position than the other ports. A reply was promised within a week or two.”
